Earlier today at the Web 2.0 conference 2010, Eric Schmidt not only presented the new legendary super secret phone, but Android 2.3 Gingerbread as well. Amongst the new features included in the Gingerbread update are support for NFC enhanced device interaction and RFID tags. Schmidt noted that this technology (using NFC and RFID to pay for purchases using your smartphone) will eventually replace the credit card. Gingerbread, Schmidt says, will be rolling out in the next few weeks.

Schmidt played with Nexus S, which he called “unannounced phone” from an “announced manufacturer.” The manufacturer of course, is T-Mobile, and he says it’s ready to go with NFC technology. After speaking a bit more about the importance of the future, Schmidt was asked about improvements he’d like to see done better with Android, he said : “There’s a set of things that the iPhone did a brilliant job of doing on a closed system… but that the next real focus is on the application layer. You have to establish volume first, which is what we’ve done…We think Android will be a leading platform, if not the leading platform.”

Back in August this year Consumer Reports published its last smartphone rating. A lot has changed since the last report. Having said that, there is one thing that hasn’t changed at all – the fact that Android-based devices dominate the ratings. It’s almost embarrassing, actually.

Here’s how it breaks down for the four major U.S. carriers:

Verizon:

Motorola Droid X

Motorola Droid 2

HTC Droid Incredible

LG Ally

T-Mobile:

Samsung Vibrant

HTC myTouch 3G Slide

Sprint:

HTC Evo 4G

Samsung Intercept

HTC Hero

AT&T:

Samsung Captivate

iPhone 3GS

HTC Aria

Android has the top two rated phones for three out of the four major U.S. carriers. The only one it didn’t get was No. 2 on AT&T. That spot went to the iPhone 3G S, not even the iPhone 4G. In fact, there’s a sidebar in which CR writes that it still doesn’t recommend the iPhone 4 because of that whole reception thing (though it is actually rated higher than the Captivate, even if it isn’t recommended). Here is the link to the actual report if you want to check it.

I spend a lot of time looking at Google News on my various smartphones. That’s why I’m happy to say the search giant has improved Google News for smartphone devices that run on the Android OS, iPhone (iOS) OS and webOS. Google has updated the way Google News works on these devices, which should make browsing on the go much, much easier. With easily identified categories and screen-saving features, the smartphone optimisations that went into effect today make a big difference on the smaller screen.

According to the Google News blog:

We expanded the story space to make tapping on articles easier and more accurate. Tapping anywhere on an article headline or snippet opens it up, and clicking on a section heading opens up that topic section on your screen.

In addition, the default view of stories is now collapsed, to reduce scrolling time. You can ‘expand’ a story by tapping ‘More sources’, which brings you to related stories from other sources. The screenshots below show the collapsed and expanded view of a story.

It’s not a mind-blowing update for Google News but it is a nice one and it makes it much more touch-friendly and easier on the eyes. The collapsible stories and optimized category functionality brings the mobile version of Google News more up to speed with the desktop version of the Google-run news portal. If you’re looking to do some heavy news consuming, you might want to stick to the desktop version of the website. But, if you’re just looking to get a good news reading experience on your iPhone or Android phone, the updated site will make your experience that much easier and more efficient.

Check it out on your phone and let us know what you think in the comments.

Samsung had an incredible quarter with over 71 million phone shipped and it looks like it is gaining traction in the U.S. market as well. It has sold more than 3 million Galaxy S smartphones in the United States alone.

Unlike Apple and its exclusive iPhone 4, Samsung took a shotgun approach and brought its Galaxy S smartphones to six major U.S. carriers. AT&T received the Captivate, Sprint got the Epic 4G, T-Mobile received the Vibrant, Verizon got the Fascinate, U.S. Cellular got the Mesmerize and Cellular South got the plain Galaxy S.

While there were some minor differences between the variants, all the Galaxy S smartphones had Android 2.1 with Touchwiz 3.0, a 1 GHz Hummingbird processor, and a 5-megapixel camera that can record video in 720p HD quality. The Epic 4G stands out a bit from the crowd because it has a full QWERTY keyboard, front-facing camera and access to Sprint’s next-generation mobile data network.

The company is also continuing its shotgun approach with its upcoming Android-powered Galaxy Tab. The 7-inch tablet will come to AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon for various price tags and it will also be available at Best Buy in a WiFi-only variant.

The relationship with the carriers is a big factor in moving units in the United States, as I know Verizon was pushing the heck out of the Fascinate – it was offered as buy-one-get-one-free and in various other promotions.

The next Galaxy S smartphone to land in the United States will be the Continuum for Verizon. This Android-powered handset will be similar to the other devices but it sports a 1.8-inch additional screen under the main display and this will be used as a ticker to get ambient information at a glance.

Can Samsung keep up the hot streak next year? We’ll have to see what the next generation of Galaxy devices have in store.

The new YouTube Remote application has gone live in the Android Market today and the program could eventually offer Google TV users a seamless way to turn their smartphones into a remote control.

The YouTube Remote application for Android allows you play Youtube videos within the app on your phone. That’s nothing new to smartphone owners but the cool thing is that once it senses a bigger screen with YouTube Leanback experience, you can resume watching that video on the larger display.

As you would expect from the name, the YouTube Remote gives you the ability to pause, play forward and search for new content. If you close out the video on your computer or TV, then it will resume playing at the same spot on your phone.

The controlling experience was pretty good, even over an EDGE connection. You merely associate an account with the remote program and you’re off to the races. Pauses, resumes, searches and loads occurred quickly with only a slight delay and connecting the controller is as simple as clicking on the program’s icon.

We saw some of this functionality with the Logitech Revue Google TV box but that was through Logitech’s own apps. By bringing this directly to Android users – I have no doubt this will be baked in to future versions of the platform – it makes these little, green robots far more capable of controlling media devices like the Google TV.

With that said, this app isn’t a silver bullet for turning your phone into a complete remote because it only can control YouTube content. That’s pretty obvious from the name of the app I’m still waiting for a single Google TV app which will let you control every multimedia device in your house with a few clicks.

It’s not that far away, though.
