Although the official word states otherwise, video evidence of a yet unreleased white iPhone4 is in distribution in the UK well before any are available in the US. The white iPhone4 models in question have since disappeared and have no record of being sold or offered. Those who were waiting in line and in queue for the devices on the day of the launch did not see the phones which were of white coloration once they were gone. This leads people to believe that reports from Apple are simply trying to cover up the slip of the white models.
Apple has released information on the white models, stating that they are not available yet and were going to be released in mid to late July, but it still leaves many questions from the witnesses of the white iPhone 4 models that have been seen in these official news report videos. The common explanation is that the Apple stores in the UK may have had white colored floor models which were not fully tested and available yet but were sold due to the high demand of the phones on the release day.
Even then, models such as the floor models which are in essence “incomplete” could not be sold to customers without some backlash. The other explanation is that some UK stores had made under the table modifications to the iPhone 4 models to provide white cases and possibly other trendy colors.
Apple says that the white colour was causing some technical difficulties in manufacturing the white iPhone 4. Speculation from pundents such as John C. Dvorak think that the white color wasn’t up to Steve Jobs snuff and so they had to go back to the drawing board to get the colors right. I am sure manufacturing something so white with all of those components wasn’t an easy task.
It is disappointing that Apple couldn’t get the white iPhone out for launch. It could have been they had to ramp up black iPhone production so much that they couldn’t make both at the same time, or it could have been legitimate difficulties. No one will ever know though, as Apple is notorious at keeping this sort of thing quiet from the public ear.
The white iPhone 4 is due out sometime in July 2010.
