BlueAnt S4 – Voice Controlled Speakerphone

Blueant S4

The BlueAnt S4 Hands-Free Voice Activated Car Speakphone is a bluetooth device that mounts on your visor (in your car, obviously), and listens.  It doesn’t record you or anything like that, no, the BlueAnt S4 simply sits idle waiting for you to say “BlueAnt, speak to me”.  That is when it springs into action, listing the commands you can say.  It allows you to say a majority of commands, and use most of its features without touching the device.

The BlueAnt measures 4.88 inches long by 2.38 inches wide by 0.62 inch deep, and is mostly a glossy black, with a small brushed metal strip with the logo that separates the screen from the speaker.  This is fairly standard for most car speakerphones, but what isn’t standard about it is the way it physically mounts on the visor.  Instead of clipping on or napping on, it has a magnet that it magnetizes to.  It might be curious to see how the magnet mounting system will work in the long-term, but it does sound like an interesting idea at least.

The trigger mode of the S4 is most definitely the best feature of this device, but it does have some other great useful features aside from that.  You can make calls, and receive calls, of course, but what’s great is the fact that if you allow your contacts to be synced during Bluetooth pairing, it will announce your caller’s name out loud when they do call.  Of course, this won’t work with Android phones, as they don’t allow calls initiated outside of the handset, but with something like a Blackberry, you’re fine.  You will be able to use your BlueAnt to listen to music off your phone with better quality, or even listen to better quality directions from your GPS app on your phone, or Bluetooth enable GPS device.

Overall, the device has a nice, sleek design, and a great feature set that will make you wonder what you did before you bought it.  “BlueAnt, speak to me” might even become your catchphrase after only a week of using it, because you’ll say it so much.  It might be fun to say that during a call while using the device to see if it gives you a menu or not.  The main drawback would still be if you were an Android phone user, but if you already don’t have a hands free device, this is still worth the buy, as the sound quality is excellent.
