As you may know, Android uses specific desktop background images. Images are made wider than the screen resolution, so that extra parts could be displayed when changing virtual desktops. In order to set your own favourite image as a desktop background, you will need to find out some details: what the width of the image should be and where should it be stored. Clearly, not everybody will want to do the additional research and play with parameters. If you do not want to waste your time looking for these details and adjusting images, you can download Backgrounds, a software available on the Android Market.
In Backgrounds desktop wallpapers are displayed as mini-pictures (previews), four per screen. You can easily flip through them using back and forward buttons. Wallpapers are divided into categories, so if you do not want to choose among the whole variety of images, you can always narrow your search by selecting one of the categories. There is a Popular button, which is intended to show the best and most popular wallpapers. However in my humble opinion it is better to search through categories, as Popular is full of garbage. When you find an image you like, you can easily download it and set it as your background. I would suggest adding images you like to the favourites list, so later on you can easily preview and change them.
Conclusion: Backgrounds is a good program for selecting and installing desktop images. It allows you to easily scroll through thousands of uploaded images and pick your favourites. And on top of that you don’t need to worry about how the image will look after it is cut to fit the parameters, and its resolution lowered.
The only minus: Most images in the Backgrounds are 480 × 320 pixels. So if you are a happy owner of a device with screen resolution of 800 × 480 pixels, Backgrounds will not be of much use to you. Hopefully developers will recognise this and add different image resolutions in the future.
